The Email Watch Dog network maintains a network of distributed test email broadcast servers, as well as ISP test email points listed below. The graphic links for Inbound data represent how quickly email travels from a broadcast server to the ISP test email point. Outbound data is a time measurement of test emails sent from the ISP test point, back to the broadcast server located in Dulles, VA.
Emails are are transmitted from the Dulles, VA test email broadcaster every 5 minutes. The graph legend identifies each SMTP server an email travels through, and the plots identify the time it takes for the test email to travel through the servers. These email delay calculations are based solely on the ISP's SMTP server timestamp added to each email (header). Because we use the SMTP server's transaction timestamps, we observe ISPs unable to maintain an accurate clock. The delay calculations can generate a negative time if a server's time clock is running slow.
